Systematic diagenetic changes in the grain-scale morphology and permeability of a quartz-cemented quartz arenite

چکیده
The material properties of sedimentary rocks are controlled by a range of parameters, including grain size, sorting, and modification of the original sediment through the diagenetic processes of compaction and cementation. To isolate the effects of diagenesis, and explore how they modify permeability, we quantified changes in grain and pore morphology accompanying progressive diagenesis of a simple system: a wellsorted, variably quartz-cemented quartz arenite of relatively uniform grain size. The most common type of authigenic cement in sandstones, quartz overgrowths are responsible for significant porosity and permeability reduction. The distribution of overgrowths is controlled by available pore space and the crystallographic orientations of individual quartz grains. We show that progressive quartz cementation modifies the grain framework in consistent, predictable ways. Detailed microstructural characterization and multiple regression analyses demonstrate that both the number and length of grain contacts increase as the number of pores increases and the number of large, well-connected pores decreases with progressive diagenesis. The aforementioned changes progressively alter pore shape and reduce pore size variability and bulk permeability. These systematic variations in the pore network correlate with changes in permeability, such that we can use our data to calibrate the Kozeny-Carmen relation, demonstrating that it is possible to refine predictions of permeability based on knowledge of the sedimentary system.

Diagenesis of Luxembourg Sandstone
Research has been conducted into the diagenesis of the Luxembourg Sandstone. Literature studies were followed by a visit to the outcrop, after which thin sections were studied. The Luxembourg Sandstone Formation has been deposited in the Hettangian and Sinemurian, both lower Jurassic ages. A sea strait connecting the Northern German Basin and the Paris Basin was located in present day Luxembour...
متن کاملAn Archean quartz arenite–andesite association in the eastern Baltic Shield, Russia: implications for assemblage types and shield history
Shallow water sedimentary units are generally considered scarce in Archean greenstone belts. We describe an unusual quartz arenite-subaerial andesite association within the Archean Hisovaara greenstone belt, a fragment of the Parandovo-Tikshozero belt within the Karelian craton of the Baltic Shield. The Hisovaara greenstone belt consists of several lithotectonic assemblages: (1) a komatiite-tho...
متن کاملMagnetic Characteristics of Carboniferous Continental Depositional Systems: Implications for the Recognition of Depositional Hiatuses
Quaternary magnetic studies have provided the conceptual framework to bridge magnetic studies into ancient systems. In cases where environmental materials have been subjected to diagenetic alteration two questions come to mind: 1) What part of the magnetic signal is preserved in the rocks; and 2) can the preserved signal be used to infer/identify magnetic patterns that are characteristic of the...
متن کاملDIAGENESIS AND RESERVOIR QUALITY EVOLUTION OF SHELF-MARGIN SANDSTONES IN PEARL RIVER MOUTH BASIN, SOUTH CHINA SEA
A study of the diagenetic evolution of sandstones from Panyu low-uplift in the Pearl River Mouth Basin was carried out to unravel the controls on shelf margin sandstone reservoir quality. The reservoir rocks, Oligocene volcanic clastic sandstones of the Zhuhai Formation, have a burial depth of 2765 to 3440 m. 70 samples were studied using the granulometric analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD) anal...
متن کاملRock physics model of glauconitic greensand from the North Sea
The objective of this study was to establish a rock physics model of North Sea Paleogene greensand. The Hertz-Mindlin contact model is widely used to calculate elastic velocities of sandstone as well as to calculate the initial sand-pack modulus of the soft-sand, stiff-sand, and intermediate-stiff-sand models. When mixed minerals in rock are quite different, e.g., mixtures of quartz and glaucon...
